A bit of history:

Launched in 2007, the first titles in the original 20 to Make series were a publishing phenomenon. The 20 to Make series was the first full-colour range of craft books to offer accessible inspiration across a range of subjects in a pocket-sized format – and at pocket-money prices of just £4.99. Over 2.5 million copies of the original series have now been sold.

Caroline de la Bédoyère, Director and Co-owner of Search Press Ltd, says:

‘‘The idea for the original series came about after many discussions with craft retailers. We were constantly being told that they wanted books that were impulse buys for their customers – low price points, packed full of inspirational projects. Ideally priced at £4.99, they would entice people to dabble in new crafts. They would also be small enough to be kept by the till as perfect stocking-fillers or Mother’s Day gifts that wouldn’t break the bank.

The series just grew and grew. We offered free desk-top and floor-standing spinners and the shops loved them.

In many cases we used them to introduce craft retailers to the idea of stocking books and when they were proved to work they migrated to carrying more expensive titles. They were also a great way for us to test new ideas and trends without investing in large how-to books full of step-by-step photography. Some of the bestsellers in the original series were titles that hit trends – such as knitted cakes and boot cuffs, sugar animals, pompoms and steampunk-inspired jewellery – at just the right time.

The original 20 to Make series has contributed hugely to the success of Search Press. The All-New 20 to Make series will build on that. We’ve included a comprehensive techniques section and so the page count in the new series is 64 as opposed to 48 in the original. These beautifully-designed pocket-sized hardbacks, each including entirely new content will open up new markets for us and take the concept to new readers around the world’’
