THE DEFINITIVE VOLUME ON THIS BELOVED ART FORM
Ceramicists have been plying their art and craft for thousands of years, and never more prolifically than today. First published in the US in 2011, The Ceramics Bible is the most comprehensive and up-to-date volume on the subject.
Brimming with more than 700 full-colour photos and illustrations, this is the new definitive guide for serious ceramics practitioners. Inside are step-by-step instructions on moulding, firing, and glazing techniques, generously accompanied by detailed photographs. Also included are beautiful examples of contemporary work, plus plenty of historical information, artist profiles, troubleshooting tips, and an extensive resource section. Perfect for students, artists, and collectors, this is a tremendously valuable addition to the vibrant world of ceramics.
Louisa Taylor holds a masters degree in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art, Ceramics & Glass. Since graduating in 2006, she has been featured in respected design publications, and her work has also earned design and development awards. Alongside making her own range of tableware, Louisa lectures on ceramics for the BA (Hons) / M Des / MFA Design and Craft degrees at the University of Brighton, and consults as a freelance designer for the industry, including concept/form development and colour consultancy. She lives in Brighton, England.

A newly released paperback version of the revised edition published in 2022 with, as far as I can see, no additional revisions since.
This is an update on the original 2011 publication which at first glance doesn't look much different but does indeed have a proportion of updated artists' profiles and accompanying images. There are obvious changes to the resources section which has been substantially expanded and updated.
What you get is a very comprehensive mix of information, instruction and inspiration across the field of ceramics. There are well laid out step by step photographs and clear accompanying text on a wide range of forming and decorating techniques from basic to advanced, the mundane to the exotic. Images of artists' finished work are accompanied by descriptions of size, construction and decorative techniques employed and firing details.
From basic information on materials and building techniques for the beginner, to monoprinting, enamels and lustres, engraving and sand- blasting, grinding and polishing - this book goes further than others of its genre.
This is where I can't decide just who this book is aimed at: to anyone working at an advanced level the inclusion of the basics of throwing and hand-building could be considered to be irrelevant and, conversely, to anyone just starting on their clay journey the chapters on advanced techniques may seem unattainable and daunting. However few of us are adept in multiple techniques and there is always something new to learn. If this book didnt start at the beginning it wouldnt be the compendium it set out to be.
It's practical approach and clear layout, artists profiles with luscious photography mean there is some- thing in this book for hobbyists, students and teachers, experienced potters and collectors. I just hope its paperback binding will be up to the rigours of my coffee table!
