Customer review

As a fan of Matthew Palmer, I already have his first book, Watercolour for the Absolute Beginner, so I was absolutely delighted to receive this new book. I spend a good deal of time in the Lake District, so this book was just perfect for me as it combined my joy of painting with the type of scenery I love. Although this book is aimed at the beginner, I also think it works well for the more experienced artist. Matthew has such a laid back, easy going style, he can make anyone believe in themselves, and find that inner artist. Using just three colours and three brushes, we are guided through a variety of projects (9 in all) from snow capped mountains to sunsets and lush green meadows. Every project is clearly explained and well illustrated. It is not just mountains, as Matthew gives tips along the way for painting trees, skies, reflections, rocks, buildings and even figures. The pages are dotted with tips, and jargon busters perfect for beginners. To summarise, this book is well thought out and simple to follow. It proves one can achieve great results without spending a fortune on lots of equipment. I think it would appeal to beginners and more experienced artists, and would highly recommend it.

The latest instalment in this user-friendly series is a worthy addition to the canon. Matthew Palmer is an intelligent and sympathetic tutor who carries his abilities lightly. Theres nothing too ambitious and he is happy to take a back seat and let the student work at their own pace. Theres no grandstanding or showmanship, just solid, honest instructions and demonstrations that produce solid, worthwhile results.

Its a Yes from me.
