This comprehensive guide to traditional and contemporary techniques provides the reader with all the information they need to produce beautiful quilting and patchwork projects. For beginners, there is how-to-start advice and step-by-step photographs, diagrams and instructions to guide them through each stage of their work, and for more experienced quilters there are advanced techniques that they can dip into for help with a particular problem. For the busy but creative quilter, a section on rotary cutting and speed pieceing shows how to achieve satisfying results in no time. The book ends with a gallery of stunning items that will inspire the reader to create amazing patchwork and quilting projects of their own, whatever their ability.
Katharine Guerrier has been making quilts and embroideries since 1980. She was trained at the Camberwell School of Art in London and worked for some years as a teacher. Further courses in textiles followed, including studying design and embroidery at Loughborough College of Art.
A regular contributor to local and national quilt exhibitions, Katharine’s work has won prizes and been exhibited in the UK and the USA. She has been a member of the Quilter's Guild and the Worcestershire Guild of Designer Craftsmen, and her work has been featured in both British and American magazines.
Her work draws on the traditional motifs of pieced patchwork, developing them to give a contemporary feel. An interest in all the Decorative Arts provides the motivation for Katharine to attempt to create textiles which are original and collectable.
I love it. It has been really interesting and useful as I've wondered how to do a lot of things that were in that book and now, I know. I especially like the piece in it about reverse appliqué as I've wanted to try it for a long time!
Wow! I wish I'd had this book for the start of my City and Guilds! This book covers it all, including but absolutely not limited to: the anatomy of a quilt, the tools needed for patchwork and quilting, how to work out your fabric requirements, patchwork block construction, string piecing, speed piecing, Suffolk puffs, cathedral windows, crazy patchwork, applique, different quilting methods, finishing methods AND THEN a range of quilts which are displayed thematically including pictorial quilts, texture, pattern and rhythm, improvised quilts and traditional quilts.
This really is a must-have for anyone who wants a book which covers it all! I also think it'd make a great present for anyone interested in sewing so I will definitely be buying a copy for my Mum for Mother's Day next month... in the meantime... this copy is mine! I am putting away my hand-sewing and digging out my machine to have a go at this Seminole Patchwork angled design!
It's 15 years since the last edition of this classic sewing book, updated with a new cover. Learn everything you need to create quilting and patchwork projects. It includes techniques such as blocks, rotary cutting, special effects, applique, quilting, finishing and themes. Each technique is explained in step-by-step photographs. Advice from beginner upwards, this is a useful book for all skill levels with speedpiecing ideas to save time. An inspirational gallery is included.
