Knitting & Crochet

December 2015

Arne and Carlos, Scandinavias superstar knitters have turned their attention to slippers. Its a perfect festive combo. All of the patterns included would make great gifts. Some of the slippers use traditional Nordic designs and motifs. Other are more playful, covered in flowers, mice and rabbits, and there are even designs for seasonal slippers such as the rudolphs that come complete with red-bobble noses. The book also shows you how to felt , and how to embellish your slippers with pompoms, frills and edging skills you can easily transfer to other projects. And once youve finished with knitting a pair of these tootsie warmers for a friend or relative wrapped them up and placed them under a tree you might wish youd knitted them for yourself

Have warm feet this winter, or give the gift of warm feet to others with this attractive book. All the Arne and Carlos books are beautifully illustrated and this one abounds with the usual lush photography showing the slippers and whatever inspired them. This includes pieces about life in the past in Norway, which makes for fascinating reading. There are slippers inspired by native Americans, the Sami, bunny slippers, Christmas ones, florals including Magnus the mouse, and of course, Scandinavian pairs. If you can knit socks you can make slippers, and these are also felted for extra warmth. At the front are detailed instructions showing how to make a basic pair, in written form with some staged photographs. Other patterns feature charts, and some include pompoms, beadwork, crocheted flowers or embroidery. All the projects have quite lengthy instructions, but the reward is impressive. This is a book aimed at the knitter who is confident with these extra skills and likes a fairly involved project. Another beautiful and inspiring book from Arne and Carlos.

The slippers come in three styles - long cuff, short cuff and clog. I know all you sock knitters will love this. The designs are very tempting and there is something for everyone here. I love the rose designs. Charts are given for the fair-isle styles. Motifs are embroidered on some styles, such as the reindeer. You can also adorn your slippers with pompoms. Full of Arne and Carlos' quirkiness that we have come to love. Cosy warm tootsies are guaranteed.
