This was much more than a stitch dictionary for me. I have spent hours leafing through it just for the pleasure of it. The precision of the instructions is a joy to follow and with hints and tips that are included you can make yours look the same. Not only is it easy to master new stitches but with the inclusion of variations for most of the stitches it is an inspiration as well as delivering information on how the stitches can be used.

There's no shortage of stitch dictionaries, but if you want to master new stitches and also explore variations of the basic stitches, this book is ideal. The step-by-step diagrams are very clear and easy to follow, and the beautiful worked samples will encourage you to distort and manipulate the stitches and use them creatively and experimentally in your own embroidery. There are instructions for more than 170 different stitches (including surface stitches, needlepoint stitches and counted thread stitches), with some unusual ones, such as Chinese knot, pagoda chevron stitch and Ceylon stitch. Following on from the success of her previously published Left-Handed Embroiderer's Companion (Yvette Stanton is a left-handed embroiderer), this book aims to redress the balance for the right-handers who were apparently feeling left out and developing a condition called left-handed envy (I was one of them)!

NEW STITCHES

Nov 10

Following the success of The Left Handed Embroiderer's Companion, Yvette Stanton has produced an edition for right-handers. It is a comprehensive dictionary of counted and non-counted stitches with clear, step-by-step instructions and diagrams. There are stitches you have heard of and maybe some that you haven't, all waiting for you to try your hand at. In keeping with the previous edition, each stitch does contain a snippet of advice at the e4nd of each set of diagrams to help left-handers which is useful should you be teaching a friend or relative. The Right Handed Embroiderer's Companion is an absolute gem and a must for anyone with a love of stitching.

The Right-Handed Embroiderer's Companion by Yvette Stanton is the sequel to the left handed version. I am right handed but have a copy of the left hand edition which I have previously reviewed here. These books are exceptionally clear in their directions and stitches are shown worked in all sorts of different ways and in sample to really give inspiration for their use. I am finding this book invaluable in my City and Guilds stitch samples. I have already got a few stitch dictionaries in my library, including the classics, but this is my first choice now as it is so bright and light and well indexed. I would highly recommend this for other students and teachers. Both the right and left handed embroiderer's companions are superb.
